According to historical sources, it is believed that the apricot is the main land of a very large region that includes Turkestan, Central Asia and Western China. A long time ago, 5000 years ago, apricots were known and cultivated in this region.

During the campaigns of Alexander the Great, the apricot was brought to Anatolia because the climate and lands suitable for its cultivation are Anatolia. Anatolian is the second homeland of apricot.

During the Roman and Persian wars, the Armenian merchants were first taken to Italy and then to Greece. The transition from Italy and Greece to other European countries took many years, Spain and England in the 13th century, and France and America in the 17th century.

There are 6 apricot regions in Turkey where about 10-15% of the world's fresh apricot productions are made. These regions are:

  • Malatya, Elazig, Erzincan region
  • Kars, Igdir region
  • Mersin, Mut, Antakya region
  • Marmara Region
  • Ege Region
  • Mid Anatolia Region

Within these regions, the productions of the regions outside of Malatya, Elazığ and Erzincan regions are aimed at producers-own consumption. The majority of the apricots in the first region are dried and cover about 85-90% of the world's dry apricot production.
